Air Force Institute of Technology installs FIPS 201-compliant system
Five buildings and 148 doors at the Ohio campus on Wright Patterson AFB are now secured via a FIPS 201 compliant physical access control system. The solution, integrated by SMARTnet Inc., reads current Common Access Cards and will read next generation contactless cards.

FIPS 201 biometric specs released by NIST
Biometric requirements for government IDs have been finalized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. As a part of the FIPS 201 standard, all agency ID cards will have to comply with Special Publication 800-76’s fingerprint and facial image storage procedures.
According to NIST: “The Biometric Data Specification for Personal Identity Verification document enumerates required procedures and formats for fingerprints, fingerprint templates and facial images by appropriate instantiation of values and practices generically laid out in published biometric standards.”

HSPD 12 solution on display at Saflink's new FIPS 201 lab
A FIPS 201-compliant solution from Saflink and Johnson Controls is on display at an ‘evaluation lab’ at Saflink’s facility in Reston, Virginia. Interested parties can visit the lab and see the solution that was originally developed for the TSA’s TWIC program.

TWIC cards hit the road in March but readers to check them remain stuck in neutral

Transportation workers will soon be carrying the first TWIC cards and they will not be delayed getting into transport facilities by a contact chip and PIN number. That is because TSA officials have decided that contactless is the only way to go for everyday TWIC use. But the readers have not yet been defined … so while a new working group does its thing, use of the new cards will be limited.

In last year’s predictions, I discussed greater adoption of smart card readers for securing buildings, making cashless purchases, tracking assets, and storing biometric identifiers. We saw quite a few of those predictions come to fruition. Many continue to hold true this year, such as the increased use of smart cards and readers for physical access and cashless purchasing. Other predictions fell short, particularly in the field of biometrics, where we still see the market adoption of the technology as lagging behind the technology offerings. This year, however, with new technologies emerging, coupled with government influence, we’ll see faster adoption of smart cards for use in multiple applications in 2006.

WinMagic disk encryption technology integrated with PIV and PKI in U.S. Department of State pilot project
WinMagic has begun working on a pilot project with the U.S. Department of State which would integrate a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card and biometrics with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and disk encryption. It is designed to help the department meet HSPD-12 mandates.

Alternative Technology signs distribution agreement with leading smart card manufacturer, Gemplus
Alternative Technology has been chosen by Gemplus as the distributor of the company’s SafesITe product line to North American enterprises in need of identity management solutions to meet regulatory standards. SafesITe, offers two-factor authentication, which combines a password or PIN with a smart integrated badge, allowing greater security than traditional username/passwords.
