FIPS 201 Product and Service Categories
The following categories have been been established by the GSA to better organize different types of products and services that appear on the FIPS 201 approval list. Click a category name to view offerings for that category.
Biometric Authentication System:
A system with the capability to perform a 1:1 biometric match using the enrollment and live authentication templates, authenticate the enrollment template and make an authorization decision based on the FASC-N on the PIV Card.
Facial Image Capturing (Middleware):
Software to capture facial images and store into the PIV card.
Facial Image Capturing Station (Physical):
Equipment to capture facial images for identity proofing and registration.
Fingerprint Capture Station:
Equipment required to capture a full set of fingerprints used to perform law enforcement checks as part of the identity proofing and registration process.
Single Fingerprint Capture Device:
A device that reads data on a PIV Card enabling FIPS 201 Biometric Unattended and Biometric Attended use cases.
A system that generates a template from an image in accordance with 800-76.
A system that generates matches a live template with a stored template in accordance with 800-76.
Cards and Readers
CHUID Card Reader (Contact):
A device that reads data on a PIV Card enabling FIPS 201 CHUID use case.
CHUID Card Reader (Contactless):
A device that reads data on a PIV Card contactless interface enabling FIPS 201 CHUID use case.
A token that contains credentials used to authenticate individuals requiring access to federal facilities.
Transparent Card Reader:
A device that reads data on a PIV Card.
CAK Authentication System:
A system with the capability to perform an asymmetric cryptographic challenge/response with the Card Authentication Key stored on PIV Card and make an authorization decision based on the FASC-N stored on the PIV Card.
CHUID Authentication System:
A system with the capability to access and determine authenticity of the CHUID stored on PIV Card and make an authorization decision based on the CHUID elements stored on the PIV Card.
Caching Status Proxy:
Hardware and/or software product that has the capability to poll the status of all registered PIV Cards periodically and cache the status responses from their issuer(s). Caching status proxies are useful in scenarios that require extremely quick query-res
Product with the capability to determine the validity of a public key certificate by using the processes of path validation to verify the binding between the subject identifier and the subject public key in the certificate.
A device that performs cryptographic operations.
The Online Certificate Status Protocol Responder responder provides PIV Card and key status information across departments, agencies, and other organizations, to support high-assurance interagency PIV Card interoperation.
PIV Authentication System:
A system with the capability to perform a cryptographic challenge/response with the PIV Authentication Key stored on PIV Card and make an authorization decision based on the FASC-N stored on the PIV Card.
Stand alone or integrated software product (e.g., an executable, plug-in, add-in, library etc.) that interfaces with a Certificate Validator (an EP category) in order to obtain the status of a public key certificate.
Electromagnetically Opaque Sleeve:
To protect against any unauthorized contact less access to information stored on a PIV credential.
Software that implements PIV Client API.
Printers & Personalization
Card Electronic Personalization Device:
The Electronic Personalization product generates and loads, at a minimum, mandatory objects as well as any optional objects, defined by SP 800-73, to a PIV Card.
Card Electronic Personalization Service:
A provider of electronic personalization services generates and loads, at a minimum, mandatory objects as well as any optional objects, defined by SP 800-73, to a PIV Card.
Card Graphical Personalization Service:
A provider of Graphical Personalization services has the capability to graphically personalize (i.e. print) PIV cards. PIV Cards are to be customized according to the physical topology as described by FIPS 201 section 4.
PIV Card Printer Station:
A devices that customize PIV cards' physical topology (as described by FIPS 201 section 4) for a particular identity. Including applications for security features.
